irmingham is set to get a new cultural quarter designed to emulate Barcelona's Las Ramblas and London's South Bank.
Details have been published of a new festival Square to be placed at the heart of the Smithfield development in the city centre.
The council will be seeking outside investment to develop the £500 million scheme, which will include more than three million sq ft of commercial space and 2,000 new homes.
Festival Square will be 14 hectares in size and surrounded by cultural and leisure facilities.
Leader of the city council John Clancy said: "With 3,000 new jobs and 2,000 new homes, Birmingham Smithfield puts people right at the heart of an exciting project that will in turn transform lives."
The city centre is already undergoing significant change, with recent developments such as the Library of Birmingham and the expansion of the Midlands Metro across the city centre.
Another development is the news this week that the £200 million funding package from M7G Real Estate is in place for the Three Snowhill office development, the largest speculative development of its kind in the UK outside London.
