London mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled plans for two large road tunnels under London, aimed at reducing congestion and improving air quality.
The scheme would see two major roads travelling underground along an east-west axis by the 2030s, with these plans likely to create thousands of construction jobs.
Of these, the first to be built would be the more northerly, starting at a junction with the A40 at Park Royal in the west of the capital and eventually emerging at a junction with the A12 at Hackney Wick.
The more southerly tunnel would run from A4 in Chiswick to the A13 in Beckton, with these being funded by tolls.
Mr Johnson said the tunnels will be necessary because central London is expected to see a 60 per cent increase in congestion by 2030 as the capital's population rises to ten million.
Tunnelling contractors could be in for a busy few years in London as plans push ahead to build a second Crossrail link on a north-south axis.
