Around 100 jobs will be created by the building of a new care home in North Tyneside, many of them in the construction sector.
The new facility is being developed by Kendal House Properties, with the new facility rep including 40 beds, the Newcastle Chronicle reports.
Constructed on Waterville Road, the centre will also include a specialist day care facility, taking over a brownfield site that was formerly occupied by commercial buildings and a garage.
It will be operated by Lenore Specialist Care, whose service manager, Laura Murray-Walton, said the new facility will close a gap in care provision in the area.
Chairman of North Tyneside Council Gary Bell formally cut the first turf on the building work and said it is not just recipients of care who will benefit from the development.
He added: "The scheme will also assist in regeneration in the area by creating jobs during construction and sustainable care related jobs once it is complete."
