Plans have been confirmed to boost connectivity across the Pennines from Greater Manchester to Yorkshire in the budget.
Chancellor George Osborne backed the call made by the National Infrastructure Commission this week for major investment in better road and rail crossings. In particular, he announced that the
HS3 rail link will be getting the green light and the M62 will be expanded to four lanes.
In addition, there will be a study on a possible road tunnel to provide a direct link between Manchester and Sheffield.
At present the two cities are linked by the woodhead and snake passes, both of which have to navigate over and between the hills, making for slower journeys and vulnerable to closure during winter snow.
Highways England will have £75 million to carry out a study on the potential scheme, with the tunnel likely to be a very lengthy one in order to avoid blighting the landscape of the Peak District National Park.
