The quest has started to find a contractor to carry out the construction of a new bus station for Wigan.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is now seeking a contractor to carry out the £16 million job, which will see the existing bus station being replaced.
Planning approval has been in place since April and construction is set to start next year, with the task taking around 18 months to complete.
It will have a single concourse with 19 stands, as well as modern waiting areas, parking for cycles and easier access to and from the town centre.
Chair of the TfGM committee councilllor Andrew Fender said: "We aim to provide a better waiting environment, improved facilities for passengers and a more modern gateway to the town for both residents and visitors."
Other work to improve bus services in Greater Manchester includes roadworks presently taking place on Oxford Road in the centre of the city to make it more friendly for both buses and bikes, by establishing separate Dutch-style bike lanes.
