Local authorities will be able to speed up housing applications through a scheme that would enable them to fast-track projects.
The government is consulting on a scheme that would enable applications to be fast-tracked, with developers even having the opportunity to choose whether to make applications to a particular local authority, a competing council or a government-approved body.
Ministers hope the plans will help speed up the planning process by tackling the current lack of incentives for councils to move swiftly.
Communities secretary Greg Clark remarked: "Council planning departments play a vital role in getting local housebuilding off the ground, but for too long they have had no incentive to get things done quickly or better, resulting in drawn out applications and local frustration."
Housing minister Brandon Lewis said three decades of research showed there was clear evidence that a competitive tendering process would help incentivise councils to move faster and process applications.
The consultation will run until April 15th.
