The storm-damaged A591 in Cumbria is set to reopen a week sooner than originally scheduled, transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has confirmed.
It will now be open on Friday 13th May, which means it will be ready for the half-term holidays and spring bank holiday, as well as the start of the influx of summer visitors.
Kier Construction has been working on the site, in conjunction with Highways England and Cumbria County Council.
The road is an important highway for the area as it is the only direct route through the middle of the Lake District, connecting Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick.
Mr McLoughlin said: "The A591 is vital to Cumbria's economy, providing an essential link for residents, businesses and tourists, so it is great news that Highways England expects to reopen the route earlier than planned."
Other storm repairs in the Lake District include the installation of a temporary bridge to replace Pooley Bridge near Ullswater, which was washed away by a surge on the River Eamont.
