Developer CQ Investments has unveiled plans for a cluster of four huge skyscrapers in central Manchester, one of which would be the tallest in the city.
The plan would include one building of 64 storeys, which would make it the second tallest in Britain behind the 73-storey Shard in London.
Other towers in the cluster would be of 38 or more storeys, with the development having 1,400 apartments.
The tallest building in Manchester at present is the 561 ft, 47-storey Beetham Tower, which was designed by Ian Simpson, the architect whose Simpson Haugh Associates firm has also devised the plan for the new cluster.
Hundreds of new jobs could be created if the plan gets the green light, with the development also including the creation of a new public square.
A spokesman for CQ Investments commented: "Our proposals provide a fantastic opportunity to develop a series of landmark buildings set within a high-quality public space creating a new community and attractive destination in the city centre."
The Beetham Tower only became the tallest building in Manchester in 2005, with the 387 ft CIS building having held the record since 1962.
