The operators of Gatwick Airport have announced plans to spend an extra £200 million on expanding both of its terminals.
Just recently, the London transport hub celebrated the completion of work to transform Pier 1 in the South Terminal, with this part of a wider £1 billion five-year regeneration plan.
Now, bosses have confirmed that they will increased this overall investment amount to £1.2 billion as they look to further enhance the passenger experience and move ahead of rival airports, most notably including Heathrow, to the west of the capital.
Moreover, announcing this latest development, Gatwick Airport CEO Stewart Wingate, suggested that such ongoing investment will put the airport in prime position to stake a claim to being the UK's number one air travel hub.
"As Gatwick rapidly approaches full capacity, this increased investment paves the way for our second runway project," he said.
The Capital Investment Programme is expected to be completed by the end of 2021, bringing the total amount of money spent on the airport since it since it was brought under new ownership in 2009 to around £2.5 billion.
