The government has announced £5.5 million of funding to repair a bridge damaged during recent flooding in West Yorkshire.
Elland Bridge is the second bridge in Yorkshire for which repair funding has been announced, after £3.3 million was made available last week for rebuilding Tadcaster Bridge.
Ministerial flood recovery envoy for Yorkshire Robert Goodwill said the cash will be partly used to build a temporary footbridge while work takes place to repair the historic crossing, a listed structure.
Tim Swift, the leader of Calderdale Council, said: "I welcome this announcement as it allows us to replace the damaged bridge at Elland given its strategic importance to the local community, for local businesses and for tourism."
A number of bridges across the north of England were damaged or destroyed by storms Eva and Desmond, with other structures to suffer including Pooley Bridge in the Lake District, which will be replaced with a temporary road bridge.
Elland Bridge is one of a number of older bridges that will have to be repaired to precise specifications, due to having lusted status. However, while their appearance may have to remain the same as before, such structures may need to be made tougher in order to deal with future floods.
