The government has announced a review of plans to build tidal lagoons to generate renewable energy in the UK.
It is aiming to establish what role, if any, they should play in the country's future energy mix, amid concerns that the strike price might be prohibitively high.
Announcing the probe, energy minister Lord Bourne said: "This review will help give us that clarity so we can determine what role tidal lagoons could have as part of our plans to provide secure, clean and affordable energy for families and businesses across the country."
The review will have input from organisations in the sector such as Tidal Lagoon Power, which wants to build six installations, beginning with a large one at Swansea.
It will look at issues of scale, finance and the potential for the development of the technology at home and overseas, including implications for the supply chain.
Prime minister David Cameron recently told a committee of MPs he favoured tidal power in principle, but his "enthusiasm" was reduced by concerns over the cost.
He challenged the industry to come up with solutions to make generating such energy cheaper.
