A government minister has said the city of Sheffield is a priority for flood defence spending, amid claims that the council's budget for defending the city against the threat is £20 million short.
Louise Haigh, the MP for Sheffield Heeley, raised the issue in Parliament, asking environment secretary Liz Truss if there would be a ministerial visit to the city to investigate the issue.
Ms Truss said such a visit is possible, commenting: "As part of the national resilience review being led by Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Letwin, Sheffield is one of the core cities that will be particularly looked at to make sure that it is sufficiently resilient to flooding."
Hundreds of new construction jobs could be created in Sheffield and other cities in Yorkshire if more cash is set aside to build better flood defences.
The government recently appointed Robert Goodwill MP to support floods minister Rory Stewart in looking specifically at Yorkshire's needs, after Leeds and York were hit hard by the effects of storms over the Christmas and new year period.
