The government has made more land available for housing via the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
Details of 600 acres of surplus land have been published, with over 80 sites now up for sale from the HCA and another 40 due to come on the market in the next 18 months.
Over 5,000 homes will be built on the land and outline planning permission is already in place for around 20 per cent.
Housing minister Brandon Lewis said: "Using surplus public sector land for housing has helped us get the country building again with the number of new homes up by 25 per cent.
"Selling off these sites will allow us to go even further."
HCA chief executive Andy Rose pledged to use the organisation's commercial expertise to make the sites attractive to developers and get projects started quickly.
The announcement comes less than a fortnight after the publication of the first 12 Ministry of Defence sites to be sold off for housing.
