Heathrow Airport has appointed Granger Architects to design its planned £16 billion central terminal development, which it hopes will be the centrepiece of a revamped airport with an additional runway.
The airport's Barry Weekes said that once expansion has been approved, "we can create a world-class sustainable hub airport which delivers for our passengers, our airlines and also helps to integrate Heathrow with our local communities".
Grimshaw partner Andrew Thomas pledged that his firm would design a terminal with "an authentic and uniquely British sense of place".
The architect won the deal ahead of Zaha Hadid, HOK and Benoy.
Heathrow's announcement follows Gatwick's decision to invest an extra £200 million in modernisation as it competes to be awarded the extra runway the Davies Commission has agreed is needed to increase airport capacity in the south-east.
The commission recommended Heathrow as the best option, but the government will make a final decision later this year.
