Work has commenced to repair the main road from Grasmere to Keswick in the Lake District.
Highways England has started operations at one of two sites on the A591 where the road surface was washed away in the winter storms.
A large digger has been clearing the site at Dunmail Raise and crushed stone will be used to fill the gap where the road was destroyed, before resurfacing takes place.
Local stone is being used to build a new retaining wall next to the site.
A helicopter survey is taking place to assess a second site where the road crumbled, further north.
The work to restore the road is scheduled to be completed by the end of May, so that the road can be open in time for the summer tourism season.
The A591 forms the main arterial route from north to south through the national park, with vehicles currently having to take large diversions via the Kirkstone Pass, which is vulnerable to closure during winter snows.
Other Lake District road closures caused by the storms included the B5320 at Pooley Bridge, with the old stone structure being swept away by the rising waters of the River Eamont.
