Liverpool's Lime Street railway station is set for a major revamp, which will lead to it being closed completely for nine days next year.
The station is set for a significant upgrade as part of a £340 million programme of upgrades for the city's rail network in order to cope with an expected doubling of passenger numbers by 2043.
Work on the network is set to take place over a three-year period, with hundreds of construction jobs being created.
Lime Street will receive two new platforms, while other projects will include the completion of the Merseyrail Loop, extra track to split fast and slow trains between Huyton and Roby, a new station at Maghull North and an upgrade of the Halton Curve to facilitate new services to Chester.
Route managing director for Network Rail Martin Frobisher said: "With demand for rail travel expected to rise by 100 per cent over the coming years, these improvements are vital for the future growth and prosperity of this great city region."
