The planned expansion of London City Airport will be going ahead, with hundreds of new jobs to be created.
Coming as Heathrow and Gatwick battle it out for the right to build a new runway, their smaller rival has been given the official green light to begin work on a £344 million expansion.
Under the plans, the terminal at City Airport will be expanded, while, on the tarmac, a new aircraft taxiway will be built, while extra parking spaces for planes will also be introduced.
At the same time, the money will also be used to improve connections to the international hub, which is located close to both Canary Wharf and the City, with new walking and cycling routes to be introduced alongside enhanced DLR and bus services.
Announcing the news, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond said: "London City Airport's ambitious growth plans will boost international connections, strengthening the City of
London’s links to destinations across the world, and send a clear signal that Britain is open for business."
The officials show that the expansion of City Airport could add some £1.5 billion to the UK economy by 2025, while also supporting 1,600 airport jobs over the long-term future.
