The £1 billion transformation of Manchester Airport has been given planning permission by the city council.
Around 60 different elements of the UK's third largest airport will be upgraded over a ten-year period, with the most notable being the demolition of the existing Terminal 1 and its car park, along with a huge extension of Terminal 2 and its parking facilities to make it the primary terminal building.
There will also be alterations to Terminal 3 and a new pre-clearance facility for those flying to the US.
Manchester Airport transformation programme director Brad Miller said: "This means work can truly begin on the project, which over the next decade will see the airport continue to develop as a global gateway for the UK, directly to and from the north."
The changes are being made as the airport anticipates a rise in annual passenger traffic from 20 million to 30 million over the next decade.
Changes already planned for the airport include the building of a new enterprise zone, while HS2 will eventually serve the airport.
