A new government-led campaign to promote apprenticeships has been launched, in which MPs of all parties will seek to secure commitments from firms to create more of them.

The 100 in 100 apprenticeship campaign will see members seeking commitments from companies in their constituencies to collectively create at least 100 new apprenticeships in the next hundred days.

Launched by the government's apprenticeship advisor Nadhim Zahawi, skills minister Nick Boles and nearly 100 other MPs, it is likely to see members pressing local construction firms to play their part in increasing the number of apprentices they take on.

Around 400 new apprenticeships have already been created through pledges by major companies, including construction giant Balfour Beatty.

Mr Boles said: "I am greatly encouraged to see so many MPs become apprenticeship champions and would urge even more to go out and encourage employers in their constituencies to create 100 apprenticeships in 100 days."

The campaign has been launched as National Apprenticeships Week approaches, with the government aiming for three million new apprenticeships to be created by 2020.
