Work has commenced on the new Cambridge North railway station, but that could just be the first of several developments as the city and wider area decide how to use the Greater Cambridge City Deal budget.
The Labour group on the city council has drawn up a seven-point plan to deal with congestion in the area ahead of next month's local elections, which includes a new station for Addenbrookes, another to serve Cherry Hinton and Fulbourn, plus the restoration of the line to Oxford.
Leader of the Labour group on the city council Lewis Herbert told the Cambridge News: "Labour supports a joint new county/Network Rail Addenbrooke's station plan backed by private sector funding, with announcements expected in the summer, and also supports the East/West rail plan."
The restoration of the old Varsity Line would link the two historic university cities again, as well as locations in between like Bedford and Bletchley, which were severed by the Beeching cuts.
