A temporary replacement bridge has been opened over the River Eamont at Pooley Bridge in the Lake District, after being swept away by the winter floods.
The historic Pooley Bridge from which the village takes its name had withstood three centuries of storms and floods, but none so severe as the water gushing out of Ullswater that overwhelmed it when Storm Desmond hit in December.
It took six weeks to build the temporary structure, which reinstates the B5320 crossing of the river and means traffic can travel from the village and places beyond such as Penrith to access the road along the shore of Ullswater.
Plans are being devised to build a permanent replacement for the bridge.
Work is also taking place to repair other flood-damaged roads in the Lake District, including on the A591 north of Grasmere, which has severed the link with Keswick.
Cumbria County Council hopes to have the road fully repaired by the end of May, in time for the peak tourist season.
