The relatively low-rise skyline of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is set to be significantly changed by a new 26-storey skyscraper.
Stonegate Developments wants to build the tower on Rutherford Street in the city centre, with 162 apartments available on a private rented basis.
This kind of development is common in London and to a lesser extent in some other cities, but only now are they being pioneered in Newcastle.
A planning application has been submitted for the building, which would not only generate construction jobs, but add to the growth of this sector.
Earlier this month a development of 290 private rental sector homes was given planning permission by the council.
Planning consultants DPP also suggested it would attract more high-earning professionals to the city centre, boosting the local economy.
It said: "It is anticipated that the new households could generate £3.6 million of additional household expenditure per year being spent in the area."
At present the tallest building in Newcastle is the residential Vale House tower block, which is 80 metres (262 ft) high and was completed in 1968.
