The government has published an update of its Northern Transport Strategy, which aims to boost rail and road links across the north of England.
An initial strategy was published in March 2015 and the report has detailed progress on this, including updates on new spending decisions and plans.
The latest developments include the investment of more than ?1 billion in upgrading rail infrastructure through measures such as electrification and enhanced tracks, stations and signalling improvements.
It also recorded a commitment by the government of ?2.9 billion to improve roads over the five years to 2020, including the upgrading to smart motorway status of parts of the M1, M60 and M6, the upgrade of the A1 Western Bypass and better road access to the Port of Immingham.
In addition, three studies have looked at ways of improving east-west connections.
The latter may be a particularly notable feature of future developments, including the possibilities of HS3 - a high-speed rail link between Manchester and Leeds - and a road tunnel under the Peak District to provide a faster link between Manchester and Sheffield.
