Dozens of construction jobs could be created by work to shore up a reservoir retaining wall in Reading, following a report establishing the extent of the work required.
A planning application has been submitted for work on the Whiteknights Reservoir wall to protect the east of the town against flooding in exceptional conditions, with the operation to shore up the earth embankment set to start in the spring.
The Environment Agency has set a closing date of March 2017 for work to be completed.
Reading Council is obliged to carry out the work under the Reservoirs Act 1975, even though most of the body of water lies in the neighbouring Borough of Wokingham.
The cost was originally expected to be £300,000 for a 30-metre wall, but a study presented to the council has now put the cost at £750,000 for a 72-metre structure that will also be significantly higher.
