Former footballer Rio Ferdinand is to be involved in regenerating a deprived area of Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire.
The former Manchester United star's regeneration company legacy - which he set up last year alongside fellow footballers Mark Noble and Bobby Zamora - will partner with Central Bedfordshire Council to regenerate the Kingsland area of the town.
Housing minister Brandon Lewis appeared alongside Ferdinand to promote the plan, which will involve building 1,000 new homes.
Mr Lewis said the partnership "showed the way" to revive communities by leveraging private sector funds.
"Kingsland is a great example of the developments Legacy wants to roll out to key locations across the UK," the former England star said, adding that the plan is for construction of the first homes to begin early next year.
Ferdinand retired from playing last season after finishing his career with Queens Park Rangers, having previously played for West Ham United, Leeds United and Manchester United.
