Construction work has almost finished on a new straw-fired power plant, which will supply enough power to meet the needs of 75,000 homes when it is commissioned.
The plant in Scunthorpe may be just days away from coming online after testing since October last year, having been built on the former site of the Brigg Sugar factory, the Scunthorpe telegraph reports.
Project manager for developer BWSC North Lincs Colin Jones said: "We are in the final commissioning phases now and hopefully, it will be commissioned by the end of the month."
The plant is expected to save 250,000 tonnes of CO2 a year by using the biofuel, a by-product of corn growing.
It will not be the first straw-burning installation in the county, with a power station in Sleaford opening-past tense, the whole sentence needs to be reworked to reflect this in September 2014.
The Sleaford station sources straw from farms within a 50-mile radius, with the ash by-product from the burning being used as fertiliser.
