Construction jobs are to be created in Hawick by the acceleration of the town's flood defence building project.
Scottish Borders Council announced a cash boost for the scheme as it submitted its annual Budget, with an extra £400,000 going towards the project.
It means the design stage of the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme has been brought forward by one year and the new defence could be in place six months sooner than originally scheduled.
Council leader David Parker said: "In terms of the additional capital resource for the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme, the council has now done everything possible to advance the scheme ahead of full scale construction."
Consultation is already under way with the local community and statutory bodies.
The Scottish Lowlands was one of the areas that suffered most from the floods caused by storms over the Christmas and new year period.
Dumfries was particularly badly hit, with the town being affected by tidal surges up the River Nith.
