Sussex University's plan to build 2,100 new student places at its Hope Hill campus in Brighton has been backed by the city council.
The redevelopment of the site at Falmer on the northern outskirts of the city will also include a new six-storey student union building, which will replace the existing outdated one.
Balfour Beatty, which signed a contract with the university last year, will be constructing the new developments.
Councillors backed the plan as it will enable the university to offer accommodation on campus to all new students, meaning pressure on local housing will be reduced.
The university's registrar John Duffy said the original design vision of architect Sir Basil Spence, featuring several distinctive signature buildings, will be preserved.
He remarked: "We will be renewing the original Spence vision with the creation of new and equally distinctive signature buildings, as well as better pathways and movement through the campus, sustaining lines of sight to the South Downs."
Located by the boundary of the South Downs National Park, Falmer also houses one of the campuses of Brighton University, as well as the home stadium of Brighton and Hove Albion, which was opened in 2011.
