Construction work will start by the end of this month on a household waste plant being hailed as a world first.
Danish firm DONG Energy is constructing the installation at Northwich in Cheshire, with the revolutionary technology using enzymes to digest household waste to produce biogas, which will then be burned to generate electricity.
The plant is set to be completed and commissioned in 2017, creating around 150 jobs at the peak of the construction phase and then converting 120,000 tonnes of waste into energy each year.
DONG's UK country chairman Brent Cheshire said: "It's fantastic to see the world's first bio plant of this type being built in Northwich, underlining the UK is once again leading the way in renewable energy."
As well as usefully disposing of large quantities of household waste, the plant will pick out and recycle plastic and metal items for recycling.
DONG is already established as a major player in the UK green energy industry, having recently gained permission to construct the world's largest offshore windfarm off the coast of Yorkshire.
It will include 174 turbines and cover 75 square miles.
